If you are staying in cool-summer areas, sow cabbage plant in late spring and harvest in fall. And if you have a mild-winter in your areas, plant cabbage in late summer for spring or winter harvest.

But, how long does it take cabbage to grow from seeds to harvest? This depends on the varieties of cabbage you grow. However, under normal conditions, cabbage can take 80-180 days from seed planting to harvest.

The basic stages of cabbage growth are generally four and they include germination stage, seedling stage, vegetative stage, and flowering stage.

1. The germination stage of cabbage

This is the first developmental stage in the life cycle of cabbage. Seeds of cabbage will be planted either in containers or garden soil and then sprout or germinate within 3-4 days. Seeds germinate or resume life when certain conditions are met. These conditions are temperature, moisture, nutrients, and sunlight.

Cabbage seeds resume life when they are exposed to constant soil nutrients, moisture, sunlight, and temperature that ranges from 65°F to 70°F for about a week.

2. The seedling stage of cabbage

This is the next developmental stage in the life cycle of cabbage. The germination stage usually lasts for 10 days or 2 weeks maximum.

The seedling stage is a transition from a seed to a baby plant. During this stage, cabbage plant develops or grows a young leaf-like structures (seed leaves), young root-like structures (radicle), and a young stem-like structures. These structures are collectively known as seedlings.

During the seedling stage, the cabbage plant depends on the nourishment that it gets from the seed because the young embryonic leaves, shoots, and leaves are still not well developed to synthesize their own food.

3. The vegetative stage of cabbage

After cabbage seeds have germinated and grown into seedlings, the next growth stage that follows is the expansion and elongation of these embryonic structures in order for them to be able to carry out complex physiological activities such as water and nutrients absorption, photosynthesis, transpiration, and water nutrients distribution within the plant.

This developmental stage is known as the vegetative stage. During the vegetative stage of cabbage, young embryonic seed leaves will develop into true leaves, young embryonic radicle will develop into true roots, and shoots will develop into stems.

4. The flowering stage of cabbage

This is the last stage of growth in the life cycle of cabbage. When the structures have reached their maturity, the cabbage plant will start to produce flowers. The process of producing flowers is known as flowering.

Flowering is a means by which higher plants used to reproduce. It is their way of preserving their generation through seed production. When they produce seeds, the cabbage plants will die up and this is the end of the life cycle. If you want to start the cycle, you need to plant the cabbage seeds and then wait for them to germinate.
