Selecting The Right Ginger Rhizomes
A Ginger Root is known as Rhizome. They are the parts of the ginger plant that are responsible for sprouting new shoots roots for expansion.
When out to get your roots, bear in mind that it’s more about the Rhizomes than the roots.
Here’s how to find the perfect one:
Look out for specimen that are not too dry and not too wet. The dry and too watery once are never good enough.
Check to see if you can find growing plants on it. They will look like horns or points. This means that the ginger is ready to grow.
Gather as many healthy Rhizomes as you can so that you can succeed even if it’s with one at least.
Preparation
Store gingers are usually treated so that they don’t grow in the stores making it hard for home gardening to happen.
To remove this treatment from it, fill a bowl with water and place the Rhizome in the water filled bowl. Let the Rhizome soak in water overnight.
Propagation
To propagate the ginger Rhizomes in water, leave them in water until you see roots 1 inch long coming out from the Rhizome. Place in the ground afterwards. Or, you can wrap with a towel or paper.
Put it in a water, moist environment and wait patiently for the roots before planting or just simply go with the normal soaking overnight, plantimg immediately and waiting for it to begin to sprout .You can choose to go with any of the ways.
Planting
When planting your ginger, use some nutrient- rich soil that can enable moisture, propt drainage and that can easily be fertilized.
Choose a good ginger pot or container with a lot of space. It must not be too spacious neither should it be too tiny spaced.
Go ahead to mix your potting soil with a good fertilizer.
Place the Rhizomes inside the mix and make sure the roots are pointed downwards. But, place the new baby shoots upward.
Transplanting
Wait patiently for the first leaves to show in the first planting. You will know this when you notice a mass of fleshly white roots a little loose from the moss. Take it out and then transplant in this way:
- Firmly get a hold of the roots under the pots edge and keep.
- Fill afresh in the pot some new potting mixes
- Surround the roots with the mix in the pot and let the top of the Rhizome look visible.
Taking Care Of Your Plant
It’s a whole lot easier doing this. Ginger loves sun and moist but not too much water.
But if you are living in a dry climate, ensure you water them adequately or grow indoors, rather so you can have an opportunity to give them enough water to drink at your convenience.
If you live in a cold weather environment, it’s also better planted in pots. Gingers don’t like the winters. They likewise, prefer partial to full shade. Make sure to fertilize as at when due. Monitor and know when to do the needful.
Harvesting
Ginger needs time to fully grow. Allow it if possible two to three years. But a year is enough for you to harvest let’s say from April to December. You can always replant if you select a good specimen from your plants for next year.
