Is it possible to grow ginger in water without soil? Yes, it’s possible to do so with ginger, and in this article, I’ll enunciate various conditions needed to achieve such a feat.

Growing plants in water without soil is also known as hydroponics. Hydroponics is a subset of hydroculture that involves employing mineral fertilizer solutions in an aqueous solvent (water) to grow plants without soil.

The popular herb (ginger) in Asia countries has proven useful in solving various health problems. It can be grown in warm climates and its botanical name is Zingiber officinale. The spice can be added to your dishes and it brings an aroma that is inviting.

Benefits of Growing Ginger Hydroponically

Growing ginger in water has more benefits compared to growing it in the soil because it does need much maintenance. However, the following are lists of other benefits attached to growing ginger hydroponically.

1# Faster growth

It allows plants to grow up to 50% faster than they would if they were growing in soil. Furthermore, hydroponic plants are not affected by seasonal variations, allowing any crop to be cultivated all year.

2# Herbicides and pesticides aren’t needed

Hydroponic farming is also beneficial for the environment because it eliminates the need for herbicides and pesticides that are used in soil gardening.

3# Consumes less water

Freshwater usage can be reduced by reusing the water used in the hydroponic system. When compared to field-grown plants, hydroponic systems consume less than 10% of the water.

4# Control of temperature

Hydroponics provides for perfect control of temperature, humidity, light intensity, and even air composition compared to growing plants in the soil. It favors cultivating ginger at any time of year, regardless of the weather.

5# Available space

Around the world, suitable land is scarce for gardening. If you don’t have enough space for a large garden, hydroponics is the ideal answer because it adapts itself to indoor gardening in apartments, city life, or small residences.

How to Grow Ginger in Water without Soil

Finally, the moment has come for you to learn how to grow ginger hydroponically. Follow the following steps for step by step guide on how to grow ginger in water:

1) To begin with, the ginger will not be rooted in water. Although the plant will be cultivated in a hydroponic system for the bulk of its life, it is advisable to first root a piece of the rhizome in compost before moving it to a hydroponic system.

2) Using a sharp knife, cut a rhizome into several pieces, each with a bud. What is the point of having several? Because it’s best to plant multiple seeds to ensure germination.

Fill a pot halfway with compost and plant the pieces about one inch (2.5 cm) deep. Water the pot thoroughly and frequently.

3) To receive the ginger plants, prepare your hydroponic system. Each plant requires around 1 square foot (.09 square meters) of growth space. The depth of the tray in which the plants will be placed should be between 4-6 inches (10-15 cm).

4) Keep an eye on the rhizomes to see if they’ve germinated. Remove the strongest plants from the dirt and rinse off their roots once they have developed stems and some leaves.

5) Fill the hydroponic container with 2 inches (5 cm) of growing medium, then lay the new ginger plants atop the medium and spread out the roots. Plants should be spaced about a foot apart. Cover the roots with growth material to keep the plants in place.

6) Connect the hydroponic system to water and feed the plants with a typical hydroponic nutrition solution every 2 hours. Maintain a pH range of 5.5 to 8.0 in the fluid. Allow the plants to rest for 8 hours after 18 hours of light.

7) The plants will develop rhizomes and be ready to harvest in approximately four months. Harvest the rhizomes, wash and dry them, and keep them cold and dry.
