Chrysanthemums go into full force at the end of the summer when your garden is looking rough.

Mums bring vibrant color when many other plants have faded. They’re popular since they’re normally inexpensive, come in a variety of hues, and their flowers can remain for a long time.

When To Plant Chrysanthemum?

Plant mums in the spring if you want them to come back in the following seasons. While mums are perennials, if planted in the fall, they may not always come back.

That’s because they’re focusing all of their efforts on blossoming rather than root development.

You might get lucky and they’ll reappear the following spring. But, in the end, it’s up to Mother Nature! Purchasing plants that are in the tight bud rather than full bloom may increase your chances.

Instead, enjoy them for the season before replanting the following year.

Where Is The Best Place To Plant A Chrysanthemum?

Chrysanthemums can grow in a variety of soils, but they prefer a well-draining, moist environment.

Growing mums in hard, dry soil hinder the roots from establishing themselves, whereas growing mums in damp, marshy soil drown the roots. Finding a happy medium is crucial.

Can Chrysanthemums Be Planted Outside?

Tender chrysanthemums should be cultivated in a greenhouse or in pots that can be left outside in the summer and brought inside when the weather cools down in the autumn.

Varieties Of Mums You Can Plant

Garden mums, also known as hardy mums, can be grown in zones 4 to 9; and florist mums, which are hardy in zones 7 to 9 but are considered as annuals in the rest of the country, are separated into two kinds.

They require full sun, which equates to at least six hours of direct sunlight each day.

Mums occur in an amazing array of colors and sizes, but they’re typically 2 feet broad by 2 feet tall.

They usually bloom for around a month. Because the foliage isn’t particularly delicious to deer and rodents, they generally leave them alone.

Other ideal varieties for planting include the following:

  1. Matchsticks (strange petal shape)
  2. Stacy Dazzling Orange (captivating orange and red color)
  3. Flamingo Pineapple Pink (strange creamy-pink color)
  4. Clara Curtis (pink flowers)

Places You Can Purchase Mums

In the fall, just about anywhere! Online merchants have a larger selection if you’re seeking a rare variety or a certain color.

They’re also available for purchase online in the fall for delivery in the spring, allowing you to plant them earlier in the season. They can get rooted in the ground in time to survive the winter by planting in the spring.

How To Plant Mums

Dig a trench slightly bigger than the pot and set the plant in it so that the root ball is flush with the hole’s surface.

If you’re having a hot dry spell, which occurs regularly in the fall, water well and get your plants wet. Alternatively, you can plant it in a decorative pot to appreciate the season.

Because the plant is generally considerably broader than the nursery pot it comes in, repot the mums so you can determine where to water them.

Please remember that mums in the soil won’t need to be watered as frequently as those in pots, which dry up more quickly.

How To Care For Mums?

A further reason to adore them is that they are easygoing plants. So, just take it all in and enjoy the show! Unless you plant in the fall, you won’t have to feed them; however, if greenery shows the following spring, feed the plant with a slow-release granular fertilizer like you would any other perennial.

If your mum does reappear, pinch off the tips of the plants a few times between late May and early July to stimulate branching and reduce the likelihood of the plant flopping over.

If you wait until July to do it, you’ll be cutting off buds. But don’t feel obligated if you don’t get around to it.

They’ll be alright, and your garden will only look more sprawled and freeform as a result.

Are Chrysanthemums An Annual Or A Perennial?

Garden mums (Chrysanthemum spp.) are daisy-like herbaceous perennials that are a staple of the autumn garden.
